White Line Disease
White line disease is a troublesome, anaerobic, bacterial infection of the hoof. It can be an eyesore, but more importantly, cause serious lameness. The resulting lameness is usually misdiagnosed due to the fact that it is often hidden within the sub-layers of the hoof and very difficult to detect.
The photo above shows a case of white line disease that is very easy to detect. This is the most common case found in sub-tropical climates such as the "Tampa Bay Area". The photo also shows a comparison of what proper shoeing can do for feet with white line disease with a shoe job from Jay Stoddard. The above case show one of the easier cases of whit line disease to detect, however, most of the cases are very inconspicuous.
Below are pictures of a crippling case of White line disease, the black dots in the frontal toe area are the results of a very aggressive anaerobic bacteria that is the culprit of WLD. These types of cases are often baffling to veterinarians and less experienced farriers, simply because of the sheer elusiveness of the bacteria. These tunnels continue all the way to the sensitive tissues of the hoof and causes infections, which in turn causes lameness. These types of cases are often mistaken for FOUNDER, and most often time written off as "just an abscess". A great deal of "common sense" must be utilized in order to perform the proper "seek and destroy" mission required to halt the proliferation of this bacteria. If performed properly, the horse will show ZERO signs of lameness as soon as 10 minutes after treatment.
The black spots represent an aggressive, anaerobic bacteria, tunneling through the hoof capsule and causing lameness. This is know as ONYCHOMYCOSIS, aka WHITE LINE DISEASE.
HUNTERS
Too many times I see hunters competing, only to lose due to their feet, A hunter should have a nice, unlabored stride with a straight knee, Though, as we know, not all horses were created equal. If simply putting a great hunter shoe job on a $800 cow pony could turn it into $100,000 hunter, Jay could have retired a long time ago. That being said, getting the most from your hunter is what Jay does best, with his proven "Gait Enhancement" techniques, as seen on his world champion winners. The facts are that break-over points must be perfect, and the hooves must be perfectly balanced in order to achieve this. Many farriers only "speculate" about which techniques make the horse move better, Jay's have been proven in the show ring....
...there's no reason why you should spend hours preparing your horse for the show ring, just to have the details end at the hoof. Jay Stoddard is a true "artisan", and promises only the best farrier work, work you will never have to be ashamed of in the show ring...
JUMPERS
Jay has spent many years working on jumpers, working shows from the non-rated all the way up to GRAND PRIX. Jay has absorbed a wealth of knowledge from other farriers and trainers in working these shows. From this knowledge, has composed a system for getting your steed through the course as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

Giving your horse a solid foundation to propel himself off of his feet is absolutely IMPERATIVE. Jay can do this for you by stabilizing the hocks. Stabilizing the hocks is common practice for him. Most jumpers' careers are cut short due to weak, or broken down hocks. When a jumper launches himself, the hocks are "hyper" loaded, making them prone to breakdown. Though, often times, it manifests as "back problems", truth be known that the back problems exist BECAUSE it tries to compensate for sore hocks...Jay can add years to your jumper's career, and even restore the career of one that has been written off as permanently lame...
